Flushing Meadows

Temporary and Permanent toilets built with Woodbrook timber

Our mission with ‘Flushing meadows’ is to provide an alternative to the commonly used portaloos that populate all outdoor events in Ireland.

Like people used to do over a hundred years before now, before water flush loos, we are putting ‘Night soil’ back to good use!

In the olden days, before Mr Crapper’s flush toilet became the standard loo, workers used to take this ‘dirty’ soil from the cities and to the farms where it was used as fertiliser for growing crops. We do the same; we’ll grow flowers and fruit trees and hopefully make festivals more beautiful places.

We have different toilets for sale and for rent. As you’ll see in the picture the ‘Staying put single’ is more robust as it has to stand up to all the seasons. In the case of the ‘Double for rent’ we look after all aspects of the toilet rental. From cleaning to restocking to build and to takedown.

We compost its contents and afterwards we spread the quality black soil under trees and on flowerbeds to nourish the soil.

  • Comes with two bins for interchanging. Process for changing bin is simple. Bin change done once every 8 months, depending on use.

  • It’s anchored to ground with wooden stakes.

  • Wood is charred and seasoned for an extra cost. Just ask and I’ll show you some pictures of the charred version!

The ‘Double for rent’

  • IBC tank for liquids is put into a hole in the ground.

The Natural method

Using good air ventilation (2 chimneys) and a design which allows liquids and solids to separate within the waste chamber, the compost toilet is pleasant to use and fits into its natural surroundings.

There is no need to ask users to visit the urinal before using our toilet. The design looks after the separation process. in order to keep the compost as dry as possible.

Woodbrook sustainable forestry

The sustainable production of our huts is made possible by the surrounding forestry here at Woodbrook. The 40 acres of woodland is a mix Deciduous and Conifer trees, and most of it has been left alone for over 300 years. Our woods are very dear to us. As long as its kept healthy (replanting regularly) the our business will do well.

Compost is a positive

Unlike other portable toilets which use a chemical cocktail to deal with human waste, the Woodhaus uses time. We leave the waste containers closed for 6 months and during this time, an army of microorganisms break down the manure.

Fruit trees and flowers

After 8 months the manure has been turned into quality black compost. We have an apple orchard here and flower beds which we spread the compost on.
